The African Lion Expedition
A Journey Across Africa to Tell the Lion’s Story

In 2026, internationally renowned lion conservationist Dr. Paul Funston, together with his partner Sally Franz, will embark on a bold and ambitious journey across the African continent: The African Lion Expedition (TALE).

The Mission
TALE amplifies the voices of lion conservation through storytelling, science, and hands-on support.
Over two years, Paul and Sally will visit lion conservation sites across Africa, where Paul will conduct independent ecological assessments, offer science-based recovery recommendations, collaborate with local teams, and share insights on community engagement and landscape management.
Their journey will be documented through powerful visual content and shared across digital platforms, highlighting real-time conservation efforts and challenges.
A New Model of Contribution
Unlike traditional consultancy, Paul's involvement in TALE will be entirely voluntary. His time and expertise will be donated—free of charge—to the projects that need it. His only request is that the logistical costs of the expedition are covered, so the journey can continue, and the stories can be told.
This is a unique opportunity for sponsors, conservation-minded companies, and individuals to support a pioneering initiative with tangible and lasting impact.

Why This Matters Now
Most lion conservation challenges aren’t about lions alone. They’re about habitat degradation, human pressure, poaching, livestock encroachment, and poor governance.
TALE will explore these interwoven issues, and show how thoughtful, informed, and integrated conservation can succeed.

This expedition is a first of its kind—a rolling, on-the-ground, conservation storytelling campaign led by one of Africa’s most experienced lion scientists.
TALE will shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of lion conservation, explore the realities faced by communities living alongside lions, and bring the complexities of this work to a global audience.
Follow the Journey. Support the Cause. Share the TALE.
If you believe in wild lions, in African landscapes that still roar with life, and in stories that move hearts and minds, we invite you to follow, share, and support TALE.
