Paul's Story

A Legacy of Lion Conservation

I’m a pioneering conservationist with over 30 years of field experience in African wildlife, focused on lions and protecting the wild landscapes they need to survive.

Early Beginnings: The Spark for Conservation

My love for Africa’s wild places started young. I did a PhD in Zoology, specializing in lion ecology and behaviour. My research explored pride dynamics and predator-prey interactions in the famous Kruger National Park.

My first lion conservation project was in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. We assessed population size and the impact of retaliatory killings along park boundaries. An experience that shaped my lifelong commitment to lion conservation.

A Researcher and Conservationist in Action

I’ve worked across Africa, from Namibia’s deserts to East Africa’s savannas and West Africa’s woodlands. My research has helped reveal how human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss, and poaching threaten lions and how to mitigate these threats.

As Director of Panthera’s Lion Program, I led applied conservation efforts across key lion ranges.

Leading the Fight Against Human-Wildlife Conflict

Human-lion conflict is a major threat, especially as people and livestock move into lion habitats. I’ve worked with communities and partners to develop practical solutions—livestock protection by herding and using lion-proof kraals, early warning systems, and compensation schemes.

These approaches reduce lion killings and foster local stewardship—often resulting in growing lion numbers where trust and collaboration are strong.

Mentoring and Training Future Conservationists

I am passionate about building local conservation capacity, mentoring researchers, wildlife managers, and even safari guides—teaching them to interpret lion behaviour safely and meaningfully for tourists, while advocating for their protection.

Research Findings and Publications

My work has shaped policies and management strategies, emphasizing landscape-level conservation—protecting both species and ecosystems.

To date, I’ve published over 60 scientific papers, plus many reports, action plans, and management guidelines.

Photography and Advocacy

I use exceptional imagery to highlight the beauty of Africa and the urgency of conservation. My photos feature in global campaigns, and on social media (Instagram: @lions_life_and_paul) I share real-time moments from the field.

Through storytelling, I aim to inspire action—whether in public talks, media, or conservation-focused safaris.

A Visionary Conservation Leader

My vision extends beyond saving a single species. I believe in sustainable, science-led conservation that empowers communities and uses cutting-edge tools.

It’s about combining hard data with hands-on action to safeguard Africa’s wild future.

Looking Forward: A Multifaceted Role in Conservation

I provide environmental consulting services that support both wildlife and local people. I also lead specialist safaris and guide filmmakers for those who want to connect deeply with Africa’s wildlife.

In 2026, my partner Sally Franz and I, launch The African Lion Expedition, traveling across Africa in our Landcruiser Troopy to visit, advise and showcase lion conservation projects.

“My hope is to hear lions roar—when lions are no longer heard in the night you know there’s trouble in the land”
